Well, isn’t THAT a term we all dream of: “Keeping It Simple”.
I like to think I’m a fairly chill parent about certain things – when I’m not being high-strung. I’m also somewhat creative. And LOVE TO INDULGE my kids’ creativity. But BIRTHDAY PARTIES?? They stress me out…
I don’t think I’m alone. EVERY year I say the same thing: “You can have four friends ONLY. We are NOT having it here. Let’s rent a hall or go do an organized birthday activity (BY SOMEONE ELSE).”
Every year my darling daughter comes up with something really cool, kind of spontaneously, and I feel HORRIBLY GUILTY not to indulge. Even though throwing guilt out the window is part of my Burn Your Cape Mantra. So MAN! – why do I do it? It’s not that I don’t like children. But I like them in SMALL DOSES. This was last year’s HALLOWEEN THEMED PARTY IN APRIL. It was the OPPOSITE of simple. I still panic thinking about that party. Hah.
So this year the plan was to keep it simple. And believe it or not, even though she came up with this LAST MINUTE WILD IDEA, it kind of worked out to BE very simple. Phew! I honestly don’t know how I did it. Hahaha.
Cupcake Party. With SOMEONE ELSE doing the cupcake designing with all those girls. Bringing ALL THE SUPPLIES, including the cupcake. (Inviting Kandy Cakes was Violet’s idea.)
Decorations. Balloons. Yep – that’s it. Oh, and a tacky Happy Birthday for the window from the Dollar Store.
Food. Chips (yes, nutritionists feed their kids chips) and Fruit Pizza. BAM! Drinks just juice from a can.
Rainbow Loom. Because it will occupy young girls for HOURS.
Ice-cream Cake. But only if you buy it!!!!!
I’m CAPABLE of being a control-freak, slightly Type-A, perfectionist. But I pulled it off AND wasn’t even that tired afterwards. It was fun. What was different than previous years? Well…Keeping It Simple was not in my vocabulary for many years. I had to do it over-the-top. So silly. Because in the end – they have fun no matter what. And more fun when you’re not a complete stress-case. One of my favourite people – Shannon – does the same thing every year for both her son and daughter. And it always involves wine for the moms. And she just lets the kids play. She’s truly brilliant. I wish I was THAT laid back. I’m in training.
And Violet’s already planning next year, of course…
